Probably split halfway in-between, ironically.
I know it's a slapstick show and I think that usually works wonderfully, but this time it seemed almost a little forced - there were just -too- many times Eddy or Edd got knocked about it didn't seem quite necessary and after a while it did get a little old for me - but other than that - well again I just flat out enjoyed this special an awful lot =) Got an A from me, quite easily.īetter than the Valentine's Special, worse than the Christmas special. Actually my biggest "nitpick" would be something I've not seen anybody comment upon thus far and that's the amount of "slapping around" the characters endured this time around. Very witty.") - again it seemed pretty funny to me.Īs for the ending being too abrupt - well, I dunno from a "logistical" standpoint I would hate to have seen them cut any of Ed's encounters with the other kids just to balance the ending a bit more naturally - and from a purely "plot" based standpoint well, it was -Ed- driving this plot, after all, and he's not exactly the most balanced of characters, is he? He decides Lothar's done, and Lothar is done - that seemed to fit just fine for his character and darn it, the bit with him sitting down in the easy chair with his robe on had me laughing out loud I don't know how they could have topped that. I will say that there might not have been quite as many "quotable" lines as in the typical EEnE episode but there were still a good number, from all the things Ed yelled while in Lothar-mode ("Earth is not your salad bar!" and "Lothar don't need no stinking map!" being among my favourites) to the occasional fun Rolf line ("You have made a mockery of Rolf's fungal festivity!") to the running gag about Edd's costume ("'Spore Boy.' Witty. And Eddy and Edd were their usual funny selves - Edd's neatly organised pile of leaves there in the beginning Eddy's Zombie Elvis costume and Edd's plague costume Eddy's "What, did I win the lottery?" confusion when Edd tried to explain at the end that the house whose door he was knocking on was his own - there were any number of points in this episode where I laughed out loud. It was neat getting to see things through Ed's eyes for a change - he's always off in his own little world in just about every episode I thought it was a treat to get to see just what kinds of things go -on- in that world of his. Personally I thought it was well-suited to the characters and to the nature of the holiday. I dunno, perhaps I'm vastly more biased than the rest of you guys, but I'm surprised so many folks had so many negative things to say about the writing. I wouldn't call this as a bad omen though for Season 5: All of these specials may have been worked on (at least pre-production phrase) at the same time so I'm sure they'll have a different style planned for the next season. At least have more of a climantic ending battle with super crazy Ed vs the other Cul-De-Sac kids or something.
At least Ed was defintley the star of this one (Eddy taking the Christmas Special and Edd having the Valentine's Day one) and the animation was incredibley inventve (I still was amazed how I never saw the "hit into door" joke each time it came despite it being used about five times) but it could of been better. As a result I chuckeled here or there but forgot exactly what I was chuckling at (I did laugh though at Kevin getting his bike broken by Ed, but only because he deserved it for egging the Eds in the first place). I kind of liked how it moved along so fast with them running into each kid as they went to spookey town, but on the other hand it didn't leave time for any joke to settle in that long. I think part of the problem resides in the pacing. I have to agree with what everyone said: Good animation, yet only decent writing.
